Ambi, the basic need is education for all, medium comes next. Japan , China is one country with one language..India is not so.

It was an interesting forward..but just by learning in English will we lose our moral values..I think that's in the blood :-).

I'm from a town and have seen the practical difficulties that my friends from tamil medium face in their jobs. We have no guarantee that we'd be working/living only in TamilNadu our entire life. I learnt Hindi as an additional activity. I spent 1.5 years in Pune where this came handy..my collegues felt it too tough becoz "Hindi" is not compulsory in Tamilnadu like how it is in Karnataka, Kerala or Andhra.

I really feel proud of our Indians in US. Do you know..Indians are said to speak the best English here..not the Japanese or Chinese people.

Ambi - Naan ithai othuka povathu illai! :)..Ok if ur going to live in tamil nadu, and if ur going to earn ur living there - then learning in tamil is fine..but what can we do by just learning tamil! Learning english is mandatory..

See I am a tamilian..I come from JAffna..In jaffna - there is no english medium..but by god's grace, I did my entire education in chennai in a english medium school..that's y I am able to live by myself is some foreign country and earn my masala dosai! I cannot live and work in Jaffna due to the ethnic conflict..So how do u expect all those ppl who lived and studied in Jaffna to earn their bread here??? thats y they have ended up working in petrol stations and washing toilets!!!!!!

Learn English! Also learn tamil!

Gnana Kirukan said...

Hi All,

I've been reading Ambi's blog for the past month or so. Got to know this link while doing a google search on Vettaiyadu Villaiyadu.

Here what I feel is - Mccauly introduced the system of education for their own benefit - Now lets use it for our benefit. because we speak the language better than Chinese or Japense - we are getting jobs and there by their money.

Learn English, behave like them - only in front of them - for the purpose of money. as you have said in one of your prev. posts - Porul illarkku ivvulagam illai.

I found two other links on this - one for and another against - which I've given below (office-la ithuku thane computer kodakarango internet connectionoda ! )

Dear Mr.Ambi,

your posts are good and interesting.

I have a suggestion. Can you ask all your regulars (those who leave comments) not to comment in thanglish ? let them write in English or in tamil but not in Thanglish. It is difficult to read as a flow.

thanks
Alex P

Ambi,

Forwarded mail is interesting. English is spoken and used in many countries. I read in todays newspaper that international companies in Germany, France prosper well because of their English speaking skills. Be good in your mother tongue. At the same time learn more languages. We should strive to teach our next generation our mother tongue. I am glad to say that I am teaching mother tongue to my children though it is not needed in this country (UK). Also, my daughter's school has a teacher to teach Tamil too.

At the same time, our fanatic politicians of Tamil Nadu will talk so much about Tamil, but their kith and kin will be studying English, French and German as languages.

ambi said...

@gops, well said, but for profession english is must nowadays.. hope U'll agree..

macaulay came to india in 1834 and left india only in 1838. so it was impossible for him to have delivered a speech in the british parliament in 1835. moreover even if at all macaulay had said what u have quoted any sane person would disapprove that because it is blatantly obvious that the country was is utter ruins back then. i know u would argue but thats how it was and thats how it is now.

Satheesh Kumar said...

he didnt say that he delivered the speech, it is said that he had wrote to British Parliment.
